Project Description
This project provides legislative support from the Canadian Department of Justice to assist the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Member States with implementing nuclear security-related legal frameworks. Project activity includes providing subject matter expertise and guidance at international workshops and meetings organized by the UNODC. This aims to assist with their efforts to promote the universal implementation of nuclear security-related legal frameworks.
Expected Results
The expected outcome of this project includes a strengthened capacity of judicial officials in Member States to ratify and accede to the legal conventions that govern nuclear security.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of December 2022 include: (1) Justice Canada participated in technical meetings to support developing a mock trial on the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT); and (2) Justice Canada participated in the Caribbean and Latin America regional meetings in 2019 and 2020 to promote implementing nuclear-security related conventions.
