Project Description

This project aims to improve radiological security in Central Asia by strengthening regional capabilities to prevent detect and halt the trafficking of radioactive material. Project activity includes organizing a workshop on strengthening the security of radiological sources in Central Asia for regional stakeholders. This would enable them to share information on and develop action plans to address radioactive sources out of regulatory control.

Expected Results

The expected outcome of this project includes increased nuclear security capacity at both national and regional levels by collaborating on developing effective threat reduction strategies.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of January 2019 include gathering stakeholders from Central Asia and international organizations in nuclear security at a regional workshop in Kyrgyzstan in June 2018. The workshop served to share best practices and lessons learned on preventing illicit trafficking of radioactive material and advance regional cooperation.
