Project Description
The project aims to develop a robust sustainable national regime in Morocco to detect deter and respond to unauthorized nuclear and other radioactive material transfers across its international boundaries. The objective is to prevent acts of nuclear terrorism. Project activities include: (1) convening a national seminar on nuclear detection architecture; and (2) conducting scientific visits by Moroccan technical experts to Canada and the US.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of the project include: (1) increased knowledge among Moroccan organizations regarding nuclear detection techniques; (2) established roles and responsibilities for each organization in Morocco regarding nuclear detection; (3) defined architecture of the nuclear detection strategy at borders and all points of exit and entry; and (4) assessed nuclear detection needs in terms of equipment and its maintenance in Morocco.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (October 2018) include: (1) held a national workshop in April 2018 to engage key nuclear security stakeholders in Morocco to conduct self-assessments of national capabilities and identify gaps to address and complete an action plan to complete a national nuclear security detection architecture; and (2) in July 2018 a team of 13 Moroccan technical experts visited the US (Houston Washington DC) and Canada (Ottawa Montreal) to observe first-hand elements of different nuclear security detection regimes and to establish contacts between Moroccan experts and their US and Canadian counterparts.
