Project Description
This project aims at strengthening the implementation and impact of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1540 which focuses on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. This was done by supporting a three-day strategic dialogue at Wilton Park United Kingdom in January 2020. Project activities included: (1) organizing and delivering a strategic dialogue to discuss ongoing challenges faced in the implementation of the resolution; and (2) identifying strategies to strengthen the resolution in the run-up to the comprehensive review.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) strengthened response to new patterns of proliferation and evolving threats from non-state actors; and (2) strengthened collaboration on national regional and global security initiatives aimed at preventing and responding to the misuse of biological and chemical agents.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2020 include: (1) improved transparency of the work being done by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 Committee; (2) improved support of member states to implement the Resolution; (3) improved cooperation and outreach; (4) revised and updated role and mandate of the 1540 Committee and Group of Experts; and (5) developed proposals for more targeted and sustainable funding and resourcing.
