Project Description
This project aims to support the operationalization of the UN Secretary General’s Mechanism for Investigation of Alleged Use of Chemical and Biological Weapons (UNSGM). Project activities include: (1) planning and delivery of a three-day meeting for experts; (2) developing a list of mission-specific equipment for a potential biological event required by UN-deployed experts; and (3) developing standard operating procedures for biological sample handling collection transportation retention and disposal.
Expected Results
The expected outcome of this project includes operationalized consistent standards and guidelines by the United Nations Secretary General’s Mechanism for Investigation of Alleged Use of Chemical and Biological Weapons for roster experts regarding an investigation into the alleged use of a biological weapon.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2019) include: (1) key recommendations produced for the development of standards and guidelines for use by the UN in the event of an investigation into the alleged use of a biological weapon; and (2) development of recommendations for equipment required for the UN Secretary General’s Mechanism for Investigation of Alleged Use of Chemical and Biological Weapons mission deployment specific to alleged use of a biological weapon.
