Project Description
This project aims to support the operations of INTERPOL’s Radiological and Nuclear Terrorism Prevention Unit. Project activities include: (1) collecting and analyzing information on incidents involving the illicit use of nuclear and radiological materials as part of INTERPOL’s “Project Geiger” database; and (2) conducting outreach missions with partner organizations including the International Atomic Energy Agency the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism and the Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased awareness by INTERPOL member countries of international standards and best practices related to nuclear and radiological security; and (2) strengthened international and inter-agency networks and partnerships focused on prevention detection and response to acts of nuclear terrorism.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2019) include the participation by INTERPOL’s Radiological and Nuclear Terrorism Prevention Unit in 39 outreach activities with the support of partner organizations.
