Project Description
This project supports the International Criminal Police Organization in the delivery of the tabletop exercise “Operation STONE” (Stop Trafficking of Nuclear Elements) which aims to strengthen national capacities in Mexico to detect respond to and investigate security incidents involving nuclear or radiological materials. Project activities include: (1) delivering training to law enforcement customs nuclear regulators and other stakeholder agencies; (2) providing electronic equipment to facilitate the scanning of passports at border crossings and crosschecking this information with existing law enforcement databases; and (3) conducting a field exercise at a border crossing point to put into practice and validate learning from the training activities.
Expected Results
The expected outcome of this project is increased awareness and preparedness by stakeholder agencies of Mexico to detect prevent and investigate security incidents involving nuclear or radiological materials.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (May 2017) include: (1) increased knowledge by 30 personnel from 10 Mexican stakeholder agencies (including the Customs Service the Federal Police and the Nuclear Security and Safeguards Commission) on the detection prevention and investigation of security incidents involving nuclear or radiological materials; and (2) access to 15 Mobile International Criminal Police Organization Network Database devices and three passport readers for deployment at border crossing sites.
