Project Description

This project aims to strengthen nuclear security measures in Peru and Malaysia. Project activities include: (1) installing and commissioning radiation detection equipment at the Port of Callao in Peru; (2) delivering training to Peru’s National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT) personnel and the Peru Institute of Nuclear Energy (IPEN) on the operation and maintenance of the equipment; (3) providing physical protection security upgrades to facilities operated by Nuclear Malaysia; (4) delivering training to personnel of Nuclear Malaysia (Malaysia’s nuclear power agency) on the operation and maintenance of the provided equipment; and (5) delivering training to the Ministry of Health personnel on inspecting and ensuring the security of radiological materials.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased access to radiation detection equipment by SUNAT personnel in Peru; (2) increased knowledge of the operation and maintenance of radiation detection equipment by personnel of SUNAT and IPEN; (3) improved security measures at nuclear facilities operated by Nuclear Malaysia; and (4) increased knowledge by the Malaysian Ministry of Health personnel on verifying security measures related to radiological materials.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (January 2019) include: (1) the successful installation commissioning and entry into service of radiation detection equipment at the Port of Callao in Peru; and (2) the successful installation commissioning and entry into service of physical security upgrades at nuclear facilities operated by Nuclear Malaysia.
