Project Description
March 2021 - Yemen currently faces the world’s largest humanitarian crisis with over 24 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. The conflict and collapsing economy have pushed over 16 million people to suffer from acute food insecurity and over 3.6 million people have been displaced since the beginning of the crisis in 2015. Essential service provision has collapsed including critical water sanitation hygiene (WASH) and health services increasing the risk of disease outbreaks such as cholera dengue fever and diphtheria. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by the lack of access to essential services and face an increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) due to the crisis. With GAC’s support this project provides multi-sectoral emergency response targeting an estimated 32 400 people in the Al-Dhale'e and Lahj governorates. Project activities include: (1) improving gender-responsive water sanitation and hygiene services; (2) providing sexual and reproductive health and rights services; (3) providing gender-sensitive cash for work activities and unconditional cash grants; (4) conducting awareness sessions and training of sexual and reproductive health services providers; and (5) increasing access to protection and SGBV services for women men girls and boys.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased and equitable use of disease-preventing appropriate and gender-responsive WASH materials facilities and services; (2) improved food security through increased and equitable access to lifesaving cash assistance and non-food items for crisis-affected people and (3) enhanced use of gender sensitive and rights-based protection services for vulnerable women men girls and boys. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
