Project Description
This project seeks to support the Government of Tanzania in implementing its national coronavirus (COVID-19) response plan. The implementation includes seven integrated interventions that directly contribute to all six pillars of the plan. Project activities include: (1) mobilizing partners and resources for effective COVID-19 responses in high-risk districts; (2) enhancing district capacity to rapidly detect and investigate all suspected COVID-19 cases and manage contacts in affected areas; (3) increasing knowledge among women men children adolescent girls and boys and key vulnerable groups on COVID-19 prevention and control actions; (4) enhancing the capacity for appropriate COVID-19 case management including nutrition care linking case management with social welfare (including mental health and psychosocial support) and infection prevention and control; (5) strengthening community-based surveillance through community health workers and the provision of mental health and psychosocial support services for the timely detection of cases; (6) ensuring the continuity of basic services for health nutrition water sanitation and hygiene HIV child protection education and social assistance; and (7) providing logistical support for COVID-19 response interventions.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) public awareness raised on threat of COVID-19 increasing community support for prevention protection of vulnerable (adolescent women) and early treatment seeking; (2) capacity increased for appropriate COVID-19 case management including nutrition care infection prevention and control; (3) continuity of essential primary healthcare and education supported; (4) social welfare and child protection provided to meet the most vulnerable (including adolescents); (5) district and city capacity enhanced to rapidly detect and investigate all suspected COVID-19 cases and manage contacts in high risk districts; and (6) logistical support provided for COVID-19 preparedness and response interventions.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2022) include: (1) reached 63 211 men 18 150 women and 14 200 children with COVID-19 prevention messaging include. Of these provided 173 hearing or visually impaired people with braille posters and messages in sign language; (2) reached out to more than 6 000 000 people with COVID-19 information. The information facilitated the vaccination of 27 771 people; (3) supported screening of severe acute malnutrition to 227 033 children under age five. The malnutrition was due to the severe economic impacts of the pandemic on poor families and their ability to provide nutritious food to their children. The screening led to 6 710 children being referred for treatment. This has saved the lives of an estimated 3 011 children who would have died without proper nutritional support and medical treatment; and (4) distributed hygiene kits to 627 248 poor adolescent girls. The kits included laundry soap buckets and reusable sanitary pads. These items helped lessen the effects of the pandemic on their family’s heightened poverty. It also allowed them to attend school or work while menstruating.
