Project Description
This project seeks to reduce the threat to the Ukrainian and neighbouring populations from stolen or illicitly trafficked nuclear or radiological materials. This is done by securing critical borders currently under Ukrainian control and addressing vulnerabilities near sensitive nuclear facilities and newly recovered territory. Project activities include: (1) providing radiation detection communication patrol and surveillance equipment to Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service the State Emergency Service and the National Police of Ukraine; and (2) providing related operational and maintenance training on the equipment.
Expected Results
The expected outcome for this project is improved detection and response to nuclear or radiological security incidents by Ukraine’s Border Guard Service the State Emergency Service and the National Police of Ukraine at border sites and within the country.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (September 2024) include: (1) delivered nuclear and radioactive detection devices and ancillary equipment. This includes 43 vehicles portable radiation detection equipment radioisotope identification devices thermal monoculars and personal protective equipment; and (2) provided operational and maintenance training to 31 law enforcement officials (10 women and 21 men) on the equipment. This training increased their knowledge skills and abilities regarding counter-nuclear smuggling and radiological detection operations.
