Project Description
This project aims to strengthen social cohesion resilience and empowerment of women and girls in the face of climate change in the Lake Chad and Kanem provinces of Chad. The project activities include: (1) providing technical support to administrative authorities and the regional council and local elected officials for improved decision-making on social cohesion; (2) training women's and girls' groups on the practice of smart agriculture in the context of climate change; (3) developing business plans for the empowerment of women and girls; and (4) providing financial credits to women and girls. This initiative is intended to directly benefit 18 000 people including women farmers' associations pastoralists women and girls and indirectly to 90 000 members of the targeted communities.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) strengthened social cohesion and resilience of women and girls in the face of climate change; (2) increased empowerment of women and girls through self-employment and vocational integration in the face of climate change; and (3) improved access to financial resources for the resilience of women and girls through climate change smart agriculture.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2025 include: (1) supported 500 women to access to microcredit. This enabled them to increase their income through activities such as selling cosmetics and clothing; (2) improved knowledge of 88 women in natural resource management and the resilience of agri-food systems. This allowed them to boost their agricultural productivity using new techniques such as crop rotation biopesticides and mowing; and (3) supported women farmers’ groups to develop 44 business plans focused on priority sectors to generate additional income. This includes market gardening small-scale livestock farming and agricultural product processing. These outcomes contributed to the economic empowerment of women and the resilience of their communities in the face of climate change.
