Project Description

This project aims to advance the reintegration of Iraqi families perceived to have affiliated with Daesh to reduce the risk of radicalization in areas liberated from Daesh. Project activities include: (1) supporting the development of a national strategy for the reintegration of families with perceived Daesh affiliation; (2) developing initiatives to build social cohesion and community acceptance of returnees; and (3) implementing programs to improve resilience to radicalization among both populations in displacement camps and in areas of return.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include:(1) strengthened Government of Iraq capacity to support the voluntary and safe return and reintegration of Iraqi families with perceived affiliation to Daesh; (2) strengthened community-level capacity to support the voluntary and safe return and reintegration of Iraqi families with perceived affiliation to Daesh; (3) increased social cohesion within and resilience of communities affected by conflict and displacement; and (4) increased resilience of populations affected by conflict and displacement to handle past trauma and present negative experiences.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2022) include: (1) 131 individuals from local government collaborated in developing two plans of action for countering violent extremism in South Mosul and West Mosul; (2) 276 local leaders demonstrated an increase in knowledge of mediation and peacebuilding principles; (3) improved social cohesion with 97% of project participants reporting increased willingness to engage with members of different community groups; and (4) the resilience of vulnerable populations increased with 3 289 individuals benefitting from essential services in the targeted areas and 99% reporting the application of positive coping mechanisms.
