Project Description
This project strengthens nuclear security in Latin America and internationally by increasing the professionalism and competencies of women and men nuclear security personnel. Project activities include: (1) supporting scholarship opportunities to the World Institute for Nuclear Security Academy; (2) improving gender parity in nuclear security through the development of a self assessment tool and international reporting framework for industry use; and (3) reducing the risk posed by transport security and cybersecurity vulnerabilities by expanding the availability of training tools and professional development opportunities in Latin America.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) strengthened nuclear security professionals’ management of nuclear and radiological security threats; (2) improved gender equality in nuclear security particularly in areas with significant underrepresentation; and (3) reduced risk from nuclear security incidents including related to transport security and cybersecurity through trained nuclear security personnel.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of January 2024 include: (1) over 75% of women and 81% of men survey respondents in World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) training courses reported improved competence in nuclear security; (2) women made up 40% of subject matter experts speaking at most WINS’ events; and (3) 88% of survey respondents of WINS’ cyber security courses and 83% of survey respondents of WINS’ transport security courses identified improved skills and abilities to manage these specific nuclear security threats.
