Project Description

This project supports Parliamentarians for Global Action’s efforts to increase the ratification and effective implementation by Non-State Parties of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT) the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) and its 2005 Amendment (ACPPNM). Project activities include: (1) organizing eight regional workshops to build awareness of ICSANT CPPNM and ACPPNM and of the legislative assistance available; (2) developing and adopting national plans of action; (3) providing technical and/or legislative assistance for the ratification and implementation of the conventions; and (4) performing further outreach to parliamentarians to promote the universal implementation of the conventions.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) strengthened ability of governmental institutions within Non-State Parties to adopt and implement the legislation policies and programs required to enable the effective implementation of the conventions; and (2) improved regional coordination and information-sharing mechanisms related to the ratification and implementation of the conventions.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved at the end of the project (November 2022) include: (1) held 8 online regional workshops for 48 members of parliament to build awareness of nuclear security legal conventions and available legislative assistance. These legal conventions include the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT) the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) and its Amendment (ACPPNM); and (2) provided outreach to guide national action plans leading to 8 parliamentary initiatives in support of implementing ICSANT CPPNM and ACPPNM.
