Project Description
This project aims to strengthen the Government of Tanzania’s capacity to rapidly detect and respond to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Project activities include: (1) supporting the government’s COVID-19 vaccination planning and roll-out; (2) producing and disseminating materials promoting compliance with COVID-19 safety precautions COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and sexual and gender-based violence prevention; (3) increasing the capacity of health workers and regional teams on COVID-19 surveillance and vaccination; (4) providing technical support to laboratories performing COVID-19 diagnostic testing; (5) procuring equipment to support regional preparations for the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine; and (6) supporting the continuity of essential health services and minimizing the impact of the pandemic on health systems social services women girls and the most vulnerable.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased public awareness and compliance to COVID-19 public health measures including COVID-19 vaccine acceptance; (2) strengthened coordination and engagement from stakeholders in planning and implementing response interventions including for the COVID-19 vaccine; (3) improved infrastructure and human resource technical capacity for preventing detecting and managing COVID-19 cases and contacts and for COVID-19 vaccination; (4) strengthened and expanded diagnostic capacity at the national and subnational levels; and (5) COVID-19 vaccine procurement and timely deployment of resources for the vaccine rollout.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2021) include : (1) supported the development of the National COVID-19 Testing Strategy; (2) provided technical support to the Ministry of Health and health facilities in areas such as enhancing the implementation of the International Health Regulations integrated disease surveillance and response infection prevention and control and health care waste management; (3) increased the capacity of the Ministry of Health to initiate and roll out the COVID-19 vaccination; (4) community sensitized to enhance COVID-19 knowledge on COVID-19 prevention measures; and (5) supported the dissemination of COVID-19 guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures.
