Project Description

This project focuses on the Comprehensive Response Plan for COVID-19 which complements the Girls Retention and Transition Initiative (GRTI) a broader four-year project (2019-2023) aiming to advance gender equality in education in Tanzania. GRTI is implemented by HakiElimu a Tanzanian local civil society organization focused on education. The GRTI project addresses the many barriers preventing girls from enjoying their right to education through local and national engagement and collaboration with the government schools and communities. Project activities include: (1) identifying and mentoring girls at risk of dropping out of school; (2) ensuring that girls can access clean and safe toilets sanitation facilities and products; (3) raising public awareness and inciting action on issues of girls’ education through multimedia campaigns; and (4) raising government accountability and action through policy dialogue. HakiElimu’s Response Plan for COVID-19 seeks to preserve an educational environment favourable to the implementation of the GRTI activities to compensate for the prolonged school closure period that puts students at risk of falling behind or dropping out in the future. It also helps in the preparations for a smooth return to the planned activities once schools reopen.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) the development and implementation of an enhanced COVID-19 Education Response Plan focused on inclusive accessibility to learning improved child protection measures and a safe reopening of schools for all girls and boys and (2) citizens and parents informed and engaged in critical problem solving in the COVID-19 education response.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2022 include: (1) the publication of a pre-budget statement advising the Government of Tanzania to respond to the impact of COVID-19 in education budget planning in national media reaching approximately 1.2 million citizens; (2) the airing of two television and two radio spots to launch national and local media campaigns promoting effective learning and child protection during school closures; (3) support for 23 journalists from 22 media outlets conducting important media surveys across the Girls Retention and Transition Initiative targeted districts to document and highlight the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on equitable and effective learning. This resulted in a total of 110 stories published in the media reaching approximately 15 million people; and (4) the provision of mask and handwashing stations for the targeted schools.
