Project Description
The main function of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Secretariat is to coordinate efforts within the SUN Movement and to track the success of the movement. The Secretariat seeks to ensure that SUN countries receive the support they need to achieve their nutrition objectives and provides coordination support to the different actors engaged in scaling up nutrition efforts. The work of the Secretariat is guided by the vision of the SUN Lead Group members of which are high-level leaders committed to nutrition. Project activities include: (1) monitoring country progress in scaling up nutrition; (2) facilitating initial work with countries that are preparing to join the SUN Movement; (3) providing support for the organisation and functioning of the SUN Lead Group; (4) developing strategies for SUN resource mobilization; (5) conducting an independent evaluation of the effectiveness of the SUN Movement; and (6) developing a revised SUN Road Map to help SUN partners better coordinate efforts to support SUN country plans.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) enhanced political attention to malnutrition; (2) increased investments in nutrition; (3) stakeholders respond to the needs of SUN countries in a timely and effective way and contribute to responsive and aligned assistance to SUN countries; and (4) increased capacity of SUN countries to bring together national stakeholders and implement effective actions to scale up nutrition.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2015) include: (1) supported the monitoring of country progress in 43 countries in scaling up nutrition (SUN); (2) facilitated timely access to technical support for SUN countries; (3) facilitated the organisation and functioning of the SUN Lead Group; (4) supported the development of tools to help SUN countries track progress on budget allocations for nutrition; (5) the Secretariat established communities of practice for policy resource and social mobilization; (6) developed guidance for new SUN countries and supported the tracking and reporting of progress in SUN countries; and (7) supported activities of the Independent Comprehensive Evaluation on the effectiveness of the Movement as well as the development of a high-level roadmap strategy that outlined how SUN partners could better coordinate efforts to support country plans.
