Project Description
This project aims to foster local women’s active and meaningful participation in Colombia the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Lebanon and Nigeria in the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women Peace and Security including peace processes and peacebuilding. This project ensures that long-term peace and stability improvements are maintained and creates a better response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the four countries. Project activities include: (1) identifying and mapping key stakeholders including local women women’s organizations civil society organizations and local leaders; and (2) providing workshops media training and lessons learned documents on local women’s active and meaningful participation in the implementation of UNSCR 1325 including in peace processes and peacebuilding.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased local women’s active and meaningful participation in Colombia DRC Lebanon and Nigeria in the implementation of UNSCR 1325 peace processes and peacebuilding; (2) enhanced coordination between local women’s organizations civil society organizations media and local authorities to support policies and legislation to implement UNSCR 1325 and National Action Plans at the local level; (3) enhanced integration of gender-responsive laws and practices and strategies to respond to COVID-19; and (4) strengthened knowledge awareness and strategies of local women and women’s organizations in the implementation of UNSCR 1325.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (June 2024) include: (1) developed 9 local action plans on women peace and security in the departments of Cauca and Tolima in Colombia 2 local action plans in the districts of Aley and Chouf in Lebanon and 4 in the districts of Bauchi and Gombe in Nigeria; (2) launched the first national action plan on youth peace and security in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC); 3) established 11 steering committees to coordinate and monitor the implementation of resolutions on women peace and security in Colombia 12 in North Kivu and 3 in South Kivu of the DRC as well as a joint committee for the districts of Aley and Chouf in Lebanon and 2 for the districts of Bauchi and Gombe in Nigeria; (4) almost 100% of 68 representatives of national and local authorities across the 4 countries who participated in training on gender-responsive conflict and crisis analysis reported an improvement in their capacity on the subject; (5) a little under 100% of 300 media practitioners and journalists who participated in training on gender-responsive conflict and crisis analysis reported improvement in their skills to integrate these elements into their reporting; and (6) the project resulted in the production of over 170 gender-sensitive media and social products covering peace and security issues in the 4 contexts.
