Project Description
This project seeks to strengthen the primary health care (PHC) system in Bauchi State with a focus on reducing maternal and under-five mortality through the fulfillment of sexual and reproductive rights of women children and adolescents. Project activities include: (1) Providing Technical Assistance to the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency to establish a functional gender unit within the agency develop gender toolkits guidelines and plans for PHC and Reproductive Maternal Newborn Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) programming; (2) Training frontline health workers on adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health and gender equality for RMNCAH programming; (3) Training key policymakers and health program managers of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Gender Equality in PHC and RMNCAH service delivery; (4) Facilitating mobilization exercises for men and boys on positive masculinity and gender-responsive behaviours in RMNCAH services; and (5) Training women support groups on RMNCAH Gender Equality Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights women leadership and strengthening women’s agency. The project is expected to reach approximately 1 536 692 women of child-bearing age and 373 400 pregnant women. It will also reach 1 867 005 adolescents and 1 438 903 girls and boys under five years old.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) Improved provision of regular and predictable funds for primary health care systems in Bauchi State; (2) Improved use of gender disaggregated data for decision making in governance management of primary health care services in Bauchi State; (3) Improved use of essential maternal newborn child adolescent health and nutrition services including those related to sexual and reproductive health by women men girls and boys in Bauchi State; and (4) Increased voice and public participation of women in Maternal Newborn Child Health service delivery.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2022 include: (1) established 432 women support groups comprised of a total of 4320 members in 216 wards to advocate for quality health services discuss health issues and service gaps within communities and propose local solutions and action plans; (2) reached 1 760 000 people with mass media messages and jingles on gender equality and Maternal Newborn and Child Health; and (3) 73 policymakers (of whom 32 are women) were trained on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Gender Equality Primary Health Care programming.
