Project Description
This project aims to facilitate more inclusive and stable societies through gender-responsive approaches to conventional arms control policy and programming. Project activities include: (1) hosting two conferences centred on increasing the participation of women in conventional disarmament and arms control (including in the development and implementation of effective arms control instruments); (2) developing a handbook for policymakers and diplomats working on integrating a gender perspective into the arms control agenda; and (3) establishing three databases with updated information on lethal violence transparency in conventional arms trade and unplanned explosions at munition sites and making the databases available to arms control policymakers and project or program planners and implementers worldwide.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased meaningful participation of women in multilateral disarmament and arms control processes; (2) increased integration of gender-informed and gender-responsive approaches to arms control practices; and (3) improved use of reliable evidence-based and common-purpose data and analysis in conventional arms control decision-making forums.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2020) include: (1) over 260 people increased their awareness of conventional arms control issues and priorities through participation in various workshops symposia and expert meetings; (2) established and updated three databases on lethal violence transparency in the conventional arms trade and unplanned explosions at munition sites. This enabled the publication of several briefing notes and fact sheets on these critical issues for the benefit of the arms control community. As of June 2020 access to these publications occurred more than 37 000 times; and (3) published the handbook “Gender-responsive Small Arms Control: A Practical Guide ” which as of June 2020 was downloaded more than 2 500 times.
