Project Description
The project supports strengthening Radiological Source Security in Kazakhstan through the removal transport and consolidation of disused radiological sources from vulnerable storage facilities to a new secure and higher capacity facility. Activities include: (1) the construction of a new long term storage facility for disused radioactive sources at the Institute for Nuclear Physics (INP; and (2) the secure transport and consolidation of approximately 3 500 of these sources from a closed facility at “KazPhosphate DSRS to this facility.
Expected Results
The excepted outcomes for this project include: (1) Strengthened Kazakhstan's national capacity to safely and securely manage disused sealed radioactive sources at the end of their lives; and (2) strengthened both regional and international security by securing radiological materials and preventing acquisition for use in acts of terrorism.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (May 2024) include: (1) constructed a new centralized storage facility for disused radioactive sources completed; and (2) approximately consolidated 3 500 disused radioactive sources and safely transported them to the new secure facility for permanent storage.
