Project Description
This grant represents Canada's institutional support to the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research’s (CGIAR) Generating Evidence and New Directions for Equitable Results (GENDER) Platform. CGIAR uses these funds along with other donors’ funding to achieve its mandate. This initiative supports CGIAR’s efforts to put gender equality and women’s empowerment at the forefront of global agricultural research for development by leveraging synthesizing and filling evidence gaps in its work on gender and climate change and developing options to integrate gender within climate-focused projects and policies. CGIAR is a global partnership that unites organizations engaged in research for a food-secure future. The CGIAR Consortium’s 15 Centers carry out research in close collaboration with partners including national and regional research institutes civil society organizations academia and the private sector. CGIAR’s mandate is to advance agri-food science and innovation to reduce poverty hunger and environmental degradation in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. As of late 2020 CGIAR’s refocused mission is to deliver science and innovation that advance the transformation of food land and water systems in a climate crisis.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes as stated by CGIAR include: (1) reduced poverty particularly for women and girls; (2) improved food and nutrition security for health that addresses particular women and girls’ needs; and (3) increased integration of gender transformative approaches in CGIAR research programs.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by CGIAR as of March 2020 include: (1) launched GENDER Platform as CGIAR’s resource hub for gender in agriculture research; (2) conducted research and learning activities on social equity implications of agriculture intensification and commercialization gender inequities in climate hotspots and links between gender and climate change; (3) 150 women received training as part of CGIAR Center programming supporting gender mainstreaming in agriculture; and (4) developed training plans in collaboration with partners on issues such as leadership for gender researchers within CGIAR and gender mainstreaming in technical sciences.
