Project Description
This project supports the organization of six "Global Dialogue on Nuclear Security" meetings between 2019-2021 to gather key international stakeholders to share best practices. The purpose of the meetings is to develop new ideas for promoting nuclear security track progress of ongoing work and encourage action to strengthen nuclear security worldwide. Funding is supporting: (1) administrative staffing costs of Nuclear Threat Initiative officers overseeing the project activities; (2) travel related support for approximately 20-30 participants; (3) venue and logistical costs; (4) publishing and translation costs; (5) the commissioning of working papers; and (6) the publishing of a report assessing the strength of the global nuclear security architecture and recommending ways to strengthen the architecture.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) enhanced international security by reducing the risk of materials used to create nuclear or radiological weapons or the risk of theft and/or misuse; (2) maintained momentum for the Nuclear Security Summits to engender action and accountability in nuclear security; and (3) inspired a broad community of champions for nuclear security excellence from government industry and civil society.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of September 2023 include: (1) conducted 8 plenary meetings as part of the “Global Dialogue”; (2) ensured that feedback and discussions from these meetings fed into a report on the nuclear security architecture presented at the 2021 Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material Review Conference; and (3) obtained over 2 dozen analytical reports articles and discussion papers focused on strengthening various aspects of the international nuclear security architecture.
