Project Description

This project provides funding to the International Atomic Energy Agency to implement a pilot project to provide comprehensive technical assistance to eight states in Latin America and the Caribbean. This is to develop or strengthen their national regulatory infrastructure for nuclear security and radiation safety.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) organized a regional meeting to conduct needs assessments for beneficiary countries; (2) implemented the International Atomic Energy Agency’s nuclear safety and security guidance documents; (3) reviewed legislative and statutory framework of each beneficiary; (4) training provided to staff in regulatory bodies and relevant government departments; (5) procured nuclear security and radiation safety equipment for beneficiary states.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (August 2019) include: (1) trained 130 regulatory staff; (2) held one regional needs assessment meeting in Uruguay; (3) undertook four advisory visits and 15 expert visits to review regulatory regimes; (4) organized three consultancy meetings with international experts to support project activities; (5) convened national workshops in Costa Rica and Ecuador; (6) held eight regional training activities on nuclear security and radiation safety including an eight-week pilot course for new regulators; and (7) established a new model for the International Atomic Energy Agency assistance projects presently being implemented in other regions (e.g. Africa and the Caribbean).
