Project Description
This project funds Wilton Park to convene a regional workshop in South Africa. This workshop engages political and technical officials regional and international organizations industry and academia in Africa. The aim is to promote the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and nuclear security.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased awareness among policymakers and technical experts in African states about the benefits of peaceful applications of nuclear energy; (2) increased awareness among decision-makers in African states about linkages between peaceful uses of nuclear energy and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty; (3) identified areas to enhance IAEA support; and (4) identified nuclear safety and nuclear security needs for peaceful nuclear applications.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2020 include: (1) holding a conference on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in South Africa that included 70 participants (of which 38% women) from 15 African countries; and (2) a report produced from the conference documented 70 recommendations.
