This project provides funding to the Nuclear Threat Initiative to support its work as the Secretariat of the International Partnership for Nuclear Disarmament Verification (IPNDV) from 2019 to 2022. Project activities include: (1) supporting the IPNDV plenary and working groups; and (2) supporting the IPNDV outreach activities.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) supported experts involved in the IPNDV by convening plenary sessions and working group meetings; (2) promoted the IPNDV’s nuclear disarmament work through outreach events before the 2020 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference; and (3) continued ongoing development and maintenance of the IPNDV’s website and expert portal.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2022) include: (1) convened an International Partnership for Nuclear Disarmament Verification (IPNDV) plenary meeting in Ottawa in December 2019. The meeting included 90 experts from 23 countries to close out phase two of the initiative and launch phase three; (2) published six reports on the IPNDV’s phase two work; (3) finalized the program of work of IPNDV phase three; (4) published new content on the IPNDV’s public website and social media channels. This enabled them to promote its contributions supporting nuclear disarmament verification; (5) organized a series of virtual meetings with IPNDV partners in June 2020 to begin substantive work on the partnership’s phase three; (6) produced a digital interactive on nuclear weapons dismantlement; (7) redesigned the IPNDV experts portal to expand its utility to allow experts to engage remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic; (8) organized two panel discussions at the 2021 conference of the European Safeguards Research and Development Association about the IPNDV and its 2019 technical exercise in Belgium; (9) hosted a virtual symposium on innovations in nuclear disarmament verification in September 2021 with over 100 participants from 23 countries; (10) convened a virtual IPNDV experts meeting in December 2021; and (11) organized a virtual IPNDV experts meeting in March 2022.
