Project Description
This project aims to support INTERPOL's Radiological and Nuclear Terrorism Prevention Unit (RNTPU) in its efforts to strengthen national capacities for response investigation and prosecution of criminal acts involving nuclear or radiological materials. Project activities include: (1) maintaining and expanding INTERPOL's Geiger database of radiological and nuclear security incidents including greater emphasis on data that is actionable by law enforcement agencies; and (2) developing and implementing a National Capabilities Assessment and Training (NCAT) program to strengthen capacities in INTERPOL's member states to effectively respond to investigate and prosecute criminal activities involving nuclear or radiological materials.
Expected Results
The expected outcome for this project is greater awareness and increased preparedness by security agencies in beneficiary countries of the threat presented by the illicit trafficking of nuclear or radiological materials the special challenges posed by responding to and investigating a crime scene contaminated by radioactive material and the effective prosecution of such cases in a court of law.
