Project Description
This project aims to strengthen the capacities of Ukraine's State Border Guard Service to detect and respond to security incidents involving nuclear or radiological materials. This project focusses on preventing such incidents along the administrative lines of control in the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts bordering Russia the Transnistria region bordering Moldova and Russian-occupied Crimea. Project activities include: (1) providing equipment for detection and identification of radioactive material cameras and sensors patrol vehicles and personal protective equipment to Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service; and (2) providing training to personnel on patrol strategies and incident response protocols.
Expected Results
The expected outcome for this project is the effective operation and maintenance of radiation detection and identification equipment and related border control equipment by personnel of Ukraine's State Border Guard Service. They are deployed along the administrative lines of control in the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts bordering Russia the Transnistria region bordering Moldova and Russian-occupied Crimea.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of September 2020 include: (1) radiation detection equipment was installed at two checkpoints in the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts including radiation portal monitors electro-optical/infra-red cameras vehicle inspection kits flashlights and radios; (2) design work and permitting requirements for the installation of radiation detection equipment were completed at a checkpoint along the administrative line of control with Russian-occupied Crimea; and (3) mobile patrol equipment for deployment in the Transnistria region bordering Moldova was delivered.
