Project Description
This project aims to build the capacity of the Transitional Justice Coordination Group (TJCG) to advocate for justice and accountability for Syrians impacted by war crimes. The TJCG is comprised of 17 Syrian civil society organizations focused on attaining justice for Syrians. This project also works to increase their capacity through the provision of training.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) enhanced ability of Syrian civil society to inform and influence policy discussions on transitional justice; (2) improved response of international actors to transitional justice needs in Syria; and (3) enhanced capacity of Syrian civil society and legal professionals to take part in transitional justice and accountability efforts..
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of December 2017 include: (1) 17 organizations in the Transitional Justice Coordination Group (TJCG) were trained on women engagement in Transitional Justice; (2) 1 association of 30 former prisoners in Saidnaia prison were formed; (3) one position paper was presented by the TJCG to the UN Special Envoy on the United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/71/ L.48 on the establishment of the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM); and (4) one database of crimes committed in Syria was created.
