Project Description
This project aims to increase sustainable economic growth for communities hosting natural resource development including women and vulnerable groups in Kenya Tanzania and Uganda. The project empowers community members and local civil society to advance their rights and access the benefits of natural resource development through awareness-raising collaborative community projects and law reform. By training lawyers on advocacy and international best practices related to negotiation contracts and employment in the natural resource sector the project helps improve the transparency and accountability of laws and expand the benefits accruing from natural resource development to local communities. The project primarily benefits civil society lawyers government representatives and women and men in communities hosting natural resource development in Kenya Tanzania and Uganda.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased engagement of East African law societies to advocate for law reform to reflect the principles of transparency gender sensitivity and accountability in the extractive industries; and (2) increased community participation particularly women to advance their rights related to the extractive industries.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2023 include: (1) sustainable community growth by empowering communities with knowledge about principles like free prior and informed consent and how to obtain fair and adequate compensation; (2) developed advocacy actions that spotlight specific issues faced including loss of biodiversity and farmlands environmental degradation child labour and sexual and gender-based violence; (3) increased women youth and vulnerable community members’ knowledge on actions to advance their rights concerning extractive industries; (4) increased women youth and vulnerable community members' access to legal support services to claim their rights through legal aid clinics public interest litigation and other community legal services; (5) national law societies submitted eight law reform submissions legal briefs and policies aimed at positively impacting women and girls (target of 30); (6) held 27 gender-focussed advocacy initiatives to engage law societies through national and regional advocacy platforms (target of 36); (7) the East African Law Society submitted seven policy briefs and joint advocacy strategies to the East African Community or other regional organs for adoption (target of 12); (8) community and women's groups in pilot districts carried out 42 advocacy efforts with support from the SIRD community fund (target of 36); (9) 37 community organizations participated in consultations dialogues and negotiations that represent or advocate for the rights of women children marginalized groups or those at risk concerning the extractive industries (target of 15); (10) 24% of community members in the three pilot districts used the Law Societies mobile legal aid clinics (target of 25%); and (11) 284 community members in the pilot areas received support along new or existing referral pathways (target of 300).
