Project Description

The project aims to contribute to the guarantee of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for migrants and refugees from Venezuela and host communities in Colombia and Ecuador with a gender sensitive approach. Project activities include: (1) improving knowledge and agency of women and girls migrants and refugees to exercise their SRHR; (2) empowering national/local authorities and civil society organizations in the promotion of comprehensive gender responsive SRHR services; (3) strengthening coordination mechanisms for comprehensive gender responsive SRHR rights and response to women and girls and migrants from Venezuela and host communities; and (4) increasing capacity and assistance on gender-based violence prevention and gender sensitive responses from national/local authorities and services providers.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased capacity for women and girls from communities and institutions to promote and exercise their voice and agency related to their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR); (2) increased access to comprehensive gender response SRHR services for women and girls; and (3) improved access to healthcare assistance and referrals for women and girls from host communities and Venezuelan migrants who are survivors of gender-based violence and sexual exploitation.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2021 include: (1) provided comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services to 5 300 migrants refugees and host community members (of which 4 430 women and 444 girls); (2) reached 20 299 beneficiaries (of which 11 325 women and 1 744 girls) through SRHR campaigns; and (3) delivered training and campaign information in health centres. The COVID-19 pandemic posed a big challenge for the project’s implementation. The International Organization for Migration started delivering the training and campaign information in these health centres because they were among the few places allowed to open. This led to further training and support for health centre staff to assist on SRHR. Results achieved in Colombia and Ecuador as of the end of the project (September 2021) include: (1) 63 442 women girls and other beneficiaries participated in gender promotion activities on sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR); (2) 11 384 beneficiaries reported having access to gender-sensitive SRHR assistance; and (3) 1 240 medical and non-medical service providers learned about the principles guiding gender-based violence (GBV) including support towards women and girls survivors and referrals of GBV; and (4) the project contributed to 14 483 women girls migrants refugees and host communities access to quality health services. These services far exceeded the original target of 13 600 covering gender sexual and reproductive health and rights.
