Project Description

This project supports the Sudan Ministry of Education’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and works to strengthen and contribute to the preparations for safe school re-openings. This project also works to direct funding to areas of the country with the highest numbers of refugee and migrant children and the highest needs for education and protection support. Project activities include: (1) providing training to teachers on COVID-19 awareness well-being psychosocial support and teaching pedagogy; and (2) rehabilitating classrooms and schools with a focus on ensuring gender-sensitive water and sanitation facilities.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved equitable access to safe gender-sensitive and conducive learning environments with safe drinking water washing units and functioning sanitation facilities; and (2) improved capacity of teachers and adolescents to ensure the safe operations in schools within the COVID-19 context.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of December 2023 include: (1) provided COVID-19 kits to 480 schools to apply the Ministry of Education’s safe back-to-school protocols; (2) provided Teacher Preparedness Training to 655 teachers (67% women) from 1 000 schools on safe back to school protocols and addressing gaps in learning due to school closures; (3) trained 144 teachers from 48 schools in Khartoum in school hygiene club formation; (4) trained 30 students from each school (1 440 students in total of which 60% girls) who participated in the formation of school clubs; and (5) distributed 200 adolescent kits and 200 recreational kits to schools to support formation of school hygiene clubs.
