Project Description
This project aims to ensure that feminist voices contribute to the discussions and outcomes of the 2018 G7. This project supports the Women 7 (W7) initiative to create a forum whereby feminist leaders from Canada and around the world come together to strategize identify common priorities access and influence decision-making spaces and share their visions for a more feminist G7. The W7 is meeting alongside the G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council to ensure interaction with the council and key decision-makers. The W7 aims to bring together approximately 50 feminist leaders from Canada the G7 countries and the Global South in Ottawa. The W7 initiative is two full days of meetings including an evening reception with policymakers on April 25 2018 and a public event on April 26 2018.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) communicate ‘Feminist Visions for the G7’ to the Gender Equality Advisory Council the Canadian presidency and global leaders; (2) amplify feminist voices and leaders to the greater public through social media media and a public event; and (3) identify opportunities for collaborative advocacy by linking local provincial and territorial national and global activism.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (April 2018) include a communiqué issued by the W7 calling on all G7 leaders to: (1) adopt intersectional feminism; (2) facilitate women’s economic empowerment; (3) build a more peaceful and secure world; (4) work together on climate change; (5) adopt a feminist approach to sexual and reproductive health and rights; 6) end violence against women; and (7) build feminist movements.
