Project Description
This project aims to increase access to justice for Syrians by holding war criminals accountable. The project does this by collecting evidence investigating and building case files against individuals responsible for war crimes in Syria. Case files are shared with the United Nations International and Impartial and Independent Mechanism that is investigating war crimes and crimes against humanity that were committed in Syria.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to justice and accountability for Syrians affected by the conflict; (2) enhanced right to truth concerning serious violations of international law; and (3) strengthened international response to war crimes in Syria.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of (May 2018) include: (1) 1 criminal case was prosecuted; (2) 2 criminal prosecutions were launched; (3) 296 suspects were under investigation; and (4) 107 requests for assistance esponded to from 90 national authorities and 17 requests from other entities including Syrian and international NGOs and the UN.
