Project Description
This project aims to improve the effectiveness of defence counsels appearing before international courts and tribunals as well as in proceedings in Lebanon and the wider Arabic-speaking region. This project supports efforts by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) to publish a handbook on international criminal trials for legal practitioners law students and the public. The STL established by the United Nations in 2009 is the first international criminal tribunal to adjudicate cases involving terrorism as a criminal offence in the Middle East. To preserve lessons learned the handbook aims to capture the challenges encountered and solutions found over the course of its operations and those of other international courts and tribunals.
Expected Results
The expected outcome for this project is a handbook to facilitate more effective representation of defendants and victims in international trials.
