Project Description

This project aims to advance gender equality in education in Tanzania. The project works to address the many barriers preventing girls from enjoying their right to education through local and national engagement and collaboration with government schools and communities. By addressing girls’ education which is one of the most effective approaches to challenge poverty and inequality the project works to target the root causes of poverty. Project activities include: (1) identifying and mentoring girls at risk of dropping out of school; (2) ensuring that girls can access clean safe toilets and sanitation facilities and products; (3) raising public awareness and inciting action on issues of girls’ education through multimedia campaigns; and (4) raising government accountability and action through policy dialogue.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) empowered girls with the skills knowledge and a voice to demand their rights to quality and safe education; (2) identified and mentored girls that are at risk of dropping out; (3) engaged boys parents and teachers to understand girls' rights and their role in ensuring that girls can realize those rights; and (4) supported community-led infrastructure to improve water and sanitation facilities for girls and ensure sustainable provision of sanitary pads.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2023 include: (1) 100% of the girls in the targeted schools (13 500) now have access to reusable sanitary pads; (2) 4 668 girls (62% of the set target of 7 500) in the targeted schools are reporting meaningful participation in decisions and voicing their opinions in family and at school; (3) 15 838 parents (87.9% of the set target of 18 000) participated in actions to promote girls’ education and gender equality; and (4) trained 124 Local Government Authority (LGA) officials (172% of the set target) from 12 targeted district councils on gender budgeting their roles and responsibilities in addressing challenges affecting girls’ education and ensuring gender-sensitive budgeting in their districts.
