Project Description
This project aims to improve learning outcomes for women and girls in fragile and conflict-afflicted settings. The project supports the Safe to Learn Campaign a global inter-agency and multi-country initiative dedicated to ending violence in and around schools so children are free to learn thrive and pursue their dreams. The project focuses on addressing violence as a barrier to girls’ education and providing support for developing materials to enhance the integration of gender equality across the Safe to Learn Campaign. Project activities include: (1) increasing the knowledge and capacity of girls and boys teachers administrators community members and religious leaders to recognize the impact of violence in and around schools; (2) promoting positive gender equitable norms and preventing harassment through the use of positive discipline and addressing gender stereotypes in communities; (3) strengthening education and child protection systems to be gender responsive by preventing sexual and gender-based violence in and around schools; and (4) empowering girls and boys by engaging them in the design and delivery of solutions to prevent and respond to violence through life skills education.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased equitable access to safe secure quality inclusive education and learning for girls adolescent girls and women including those with disabilities; (2) improved equitable and coordinated provision of safe quality gender-responsive and evidence-based formal and non-formal education for women and girls; and (3) strengthened education and child protection systems and gender norms at the individual community institutional and policy levels.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (May 2022) include: (1) reached 9 000 girls and boys who experienced violence in and around schools through health social justice or law enforcement services in Cote d’Ivoire Niger Mali and Togo; (2) taught approximately 47 000 children and adolescents techniques to safely prevent and respond to violence including physical fights bullying physical attack forced sex or unwanted sexual touch in Cote d’Ivoire Niger and Togo; (3) provided information to 47 500 school-aged children experiencing bullying corporal punishment harassment violence sexual discrimination and abuse (girls and boys ages 13 to 17 years old) to prevent violence in school in Cote d’Ivoire; (4) established 29 primary school cooperatives in Mali to monitor and refer cases of violence against children at the school level; (5) trained 455 teachers on gender and GBV issues from 151 schools at national level in 3 regions of Togo; (6) trained 60 village child protection committees established in Niger with 720 members (480 men and 240 women) on themes of violence against children educating young girls early marriage community mobilization and awareness-raising techniques. This led to the referral of 664 cases to child protection services in 1 year; and (7) provided technical and vocational education and training for 316 girls adolescents and young women not attending school in Côte d’Ivoire. Of these 166 returned to school and 150 entered vocational training.
