Project Description

This project aims to enhance community resilience and mainstream a comprehensive disaster management approach in three Caribbean countries namely Belize Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Suriname. The project aims to achieve this through supporting targeted vulnerable communities in organizing themselves and preparing for natural disasters and crises. Also by strengthening comprehensive disaster management at the national and local levels. Project activities include: (1) assessment of the current level of knowledge in disaster preparedness; 2) training in basic skills to deal with disasters and risks; and 3) training knowledge sharing and workshops on leadership in disaster risk management.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved resilience of selected communities including the incorporation of climate change adaptation and gender; and (2) enhanced practices of regional and national authorities in resilience including the incorporation of climate change adaptation and gender.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of February 2022 include: (1) Seventeen Community Resilience Action Plans with a disaster risk reduction component completed by respective National Societies (2) seventeen community resilience action plans were developed with gender climate change and environmental considerations (3) 3 174 persons reached through community awareness sessions including Covid 19 awareness raising; (4) 831 individuals (465f) received Disaster Response Training; (5) 2 278 individuals (1068f) participated in the design and implementation of 10 community micro-projets; (6) 214 individuals participated in the development of community early warning systems; and (7) 2 070 individuals received non-food items such as PPE and hygiene kits as part of Covid 19 response.
