Project Description

The project draws on the Canadian Red Cross's (CRC) expertise to increase the capacity of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society's (PRCS) staff and volunteers to respond to emergency medical needs and provide specialized health services to the most vulnerable Palestinians. By increasing the emergency preparedness of the PRCS staff and its volunteers the project helps to increase the resilience to shocks of Palestinians in ways that also promote gender equality. Project activities include: (1) improving the ability of PRCS to provide quality timely pre-hospital emergency medical services; (2) ensuring vulnerable populations have greater access to quality primary and secondary health care services; and (3) improving the quality of rehabilitation services provided to persons living with disabilities while strengthening the PRCS volunteer network.

Expected Results

The expected results of the project include: (1) increased capacity of PRCS to respond to humanitarian needs in the event of disasters and emergencies; and (2) improved quality of rehabilitation services provided to persons living with disabilities through a strengthened PRCS volunteer network.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (September 2018) include: (1) the capacity for PRCS to respond to humanitarian needs in the event of disasters and emergencies was increased through the training of 415 National Disaster Response Team volunteers (of which 104 were women) and the renovation to the Emergency Operation Center at PRCS headquarters including 11 patient-transfer-vehicles; (2) access for vulnerable populations to quality primary and secondary health care services was improved by renovating the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department and the Pediatrics Department in the Al-Makassed Hospital to include necessary equipment to achieve its globally recognized Joint Commission International accreditation and by delivering mobile health clinic services in remote communities in the Jordan Valley to 3 242 beneficiaries; (3) rehabilitation services provided to persons living with disabilities were strengthened; (4) PRCS volunteer network was enhanced by holding eight PRCS training sessions for parents of disabled children focusing on the role of families as partners in the rehabilitation process for their children; (5) the playground in the Tubas rehabilitation center was renovated; and (6) educational material and specialized physiotherapy equipment was delivered to PRCS rehabilitation centers in the West Bank.
