Project Description
As of March 2017 humanitarian needs in Sudan are mainly caused by the effects of armed conflict which drives displacement and food insecurity. In 2016 Sudan experienced a significant inflow of refugees and asylum seekers from South Sudan. As of the beginning of 2017 there are 314 000 South Sudanese in Sudan and the number is expected to grow. Food insecurity and malnutrition constitute a nationwide crisis with 11 out of the 18 states in Sudan experiencing Global Acute Malnutrition rates at or above the emergency threshold of 15%. Humanitarian needs in Darfur South Kordofan and Blue Nile States remain high with 5.8 million people considered to be in need of humanitarian assistance in 2016 compared to 5.4 million in 2015. With GAC’s support ADRA is providing emergency water sanitation and health (WASH) services for up to 28 300 conflict-affected people in Blue Nile State Sudan. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating and expanding four water supply and distribution systems; (2) training 24 water committee members (8 female) on operational and financial management of water sources; (3) training 15 technicians/operators (5 female) on water sources maintenance water treatment/chlorination; and (4) distributing 2 000 latrine slabs to be utilized to construct household latrines and reducing related security and health risks especially for women and girls.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe drinking water for 28 300 people (12 200 female 11 300 male 4 800 children); (2) improved hygiene and sanitation practices and facilities for 28 300 people (12 200 female 11 300 male 4 800 children). The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in Sudan conflict affected population including internally displaced persons and host communities.
