South Sudan - Emergency Assistance - International Organization for Migration 2016

March 2016 - An estimated 8.7 million people across South Sudan are affected by the effects of armed conflict and inter-communal violence economic decline disease and climatic shocks. Nearly 1.7 million are internally displaced within South Sudan and over 640 000 South Sudanese have sought protection in neighbouring countries. The civil war as well as erratic rainfall in some areas has driven 3.9 million people into severe food insecurity with malnutrition rates over emergency thresholds. Outbreaks of cholera measles and hepatitis E have strained an already overwhelmed health system. Humanitarian access remains restricted in many conflict areas and large numbers of people are accessible only by air drops. With GAC’s support the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is improving health and living conditions of internally displaced South Sudanese and refugees in South Sudan. Project activities include: (1) providing emergency shelter kits and non-food items for up to 950 000 vulnerable internally displaced people; (2) coordinating camp management of over 200 000 internally displaced people in UN bases; (3) deploying mobile teams to remote locations where IDPs and vulnerable communities lack water sanitation and hygiene services; (4) providing emergency water sanitation and hygiene for up to 198 000 conflict-affected people; and (5) supporting humanitarian organizations in deep field locations by establishing lightweight base camps and national NGO support centres and providing common transport services of cargo for over 75 humanitarian organizations.

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to emergency shelter and relief items; (2) increased access to emergency water sanitation and hygiene services; (3) increased access to protection services; and (4) increased ability to transport and deliver relief items. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
