Project Description

March 2016 - Humanitarian needs in Sudan are mainly caused by the effects of armed conflict which drives displacement and food insecurity but are also caused by flooding and droughts and weak governance. Sudan has recently experienced unpredictable rainfall patterns and desertification due to the El Nino effect which has negatively affected agricultural and livestock production across the country. Food insecurity and malnutrition constitute a nationwide crisis with seven out of the 18 states in Sudan experiencing global acute malnutrition rates at or above the emergency levels. Humanitarian needs in Darfur South Kordofan and Blue Nile States remain almost as high with 5.4 million people considered to be in need of humanitarian assistance in 2015 compared to 6.1 million in 2014. Approximately 3.1 million people are internally displaced by conflict and civilian strife. With GAC's support Oxfam Canada is providing emergency water sanitation hygiene and livelihood interventions for conflict-affected people in North and South Darfur. Project activities include: (1)maintenance and operations of ten boreholes two boreholes installed with diesel motorized system six boreholes drilled and installed with hand pumps and 20 hand pumps rehabilitated; (2) training 12 hand pump maintenance groups and 12 water committees; (3) constructing 1300 household latrines and four standard school latrines in four primary schools in North and South Darfur and training 500 sanitation and hygiene promoters to conduct 12 hygiene and cleaning campaigns; (4) providing cash transfers to 400 vulnerable households fuel efficient stoves to 450 households and increased access to agricultural inputs and animals for restocking; and (5) providing gender-awareness training.

Expected Results

The expected immediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe drinking water; (2) increased awareness of the importance of proper hygiene to maintain and improve health; (3) increased access to sanitation facilities and relief items; (4) increased access to improved agricultural techniques; and (5) increased awareness of gender equality issues.
