Project Description
Humanitarian needs in Sudan are driven by: ongoing conflict insecurity and displacement of people; poverty and socioeconomic conditions; lack of governance and institutional capacity; and environmental threats such as floods and droughts. Ongoing fighting between government forces and rebel groups in many parts of Sudan continue to displace civilians. According to the United Nations some 5.4 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in Sudan of which 3.1 million are internally displaced throughout the country. An estimated one million people in Sudan’s opposition-held areas require immediate humanitarian assistance. With GAC's support this project is helping to address the emergency water sanitation and hygiene needs of up to 546 000 Sudanese who have been internally displaced or seriously affected by the ongoing conflict. Project activities include: (1) establishing 25 new boreholes and rehabilitating 100 hand pumps; (2) the procurement transportation support and warehousing of materials to support water sanitation and hygiene interventions; (3) establishing and training 125 hand pump mechanics on maintenance repair and testing of water points and creating 25 water management committees; (4) assisting 1 500 households by providing materials to construct household latrines; and (5) distributing relief items to 1 500 households including hygiene kits to 500 women and insecticide-treated bed nets to up to 78 052 households.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe drinking water (2) increased access to improved sanitation facilities conforming to local norms and (3) improved access to health and hygiene materials and information. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
