Project Description

February 2019 - Due to increased peacekeeping and military operations in the centre and north of the country violent conflict spiked in 2018 causing new displacement in the centre of the country (Segou Mopti) as well as in the far north. High levels of vulnerability continue to dominate the populations in Gao and Timbuktu regions where humanitarian access remains difficult. Food insecurity water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) nutrition and protection remain high priorities for humanitarian interventions in Mali. Seasonal flooding cyclical drought intercommunal conflict and a lack of basic services continue to exacerbate vulnerability displacement; approximately 2.5 million people are food insecure and 750 000 children under 5 are malnourished. Approximately 755 000 people are in need of immediate protection services. With GAC’s support an NGO partner is providing assistance to address the urgent needs of up to 116 400 conflict-affected people. This project focuses on nutrition and on increasing access to safe drinking WASH facilities in and around health and nutrition facilities. Project activities include: (1) constructing or rehabilitating up to 6 water points; (2) treating up to 3 000 girls and boys suffering from severe acute malnutrition; and (3) providing protection services for victims of SGBV for up to 55 200 people.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access for the most vulnerable populations to safe drinking water; (2) improved therapeutic support for those suffering from severe acute malnutrition; and (3) increased access to sanitation facilities and hygiene supplies. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in Mopti Mali.
