Project Description

This project supports investigations into alleged human rights abuses war crimes and crimes against humanity including sexual and gender-based violence and conflict-related violations involving children. The project works to deploy specialized experts including forensics investigators children's rights specialists gender experts specially trained translators and criminal investigators. The investigative work carried out by these experts increases the international community’s capacity to ensure justice and accountability by enhancing justice and accountability mechanisms around the world to more effectively investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of grave international crimes and human rights violations.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved effectiveness of the international community to ensure credible and timely accountability for international crimes and serious human rights violations including sexual and gender-based violence; (2) increased capacity of experts to investigate document and prosecute; and (3) increased availability of qualified experts to rapidly deploy to emergency and conflict situations.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of July 2024 include: (1) deployed 89 experts in the context of 59 missions to support justice and accountability for international crimes and serious human rights violations in 19 countries around the world estimating to 2296 days of deployed expertise; and (2) recruited 23 sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) experts to the SGBV Justice experts roster within the broader Justice rapid response roster.
