Project Description

The project’s purpose is to strengthen the capacity of the National Election Commission of Liberia (NEC) and core electoral stakeholders to conduct their activities in an impartial transparent and sustainable manner. It also aims to successfully carry out scheduled electoral processes within the 2015-2018 electoral cycle. Project activities include: (1) providing support to the NEC and other key actors including the Inter-Party Consultative Committee the Constitutional Review Commission and the Liberia National Police; (2) supporting media and civil society organizations that focus on building effective engagement and the inclusion of women and youth in democratic processes and peace building initiatives; (3) promoting institutional changes to enhance the independence and credibility of the Government of Liberia to deliver peaceful elections; and (4) strengthening the capacities of the NEC to achieve long-term democratic gains in Liberia and inspire public confidence in the government.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project are: (1) enhanced women’s political participation and leadership in election cycle and processes; (2) increased capacity and coordination between political parties and civil society organizations; (3) increased capacity of election security forces to effectively and fairly maintain rule of law during election cycle; and (4) increased voter education and civic engagement.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of December 2018 include: (1) electoral management systems and processes were strengthened/reformed to support free and fair elections in Liberia; (2) training manuals for the ERP (a technical support to National Election Commission (NEC)) finalized and approved; and (3) provided significant support to NEC to conduct the by-elections in two counties.
