Project Description
March 2018 – As a result of the political tension and insecurity ongoing in neighbouring Burundi since 2015 north-western Tanzania now hosts approximately 275 000 Burundian refugees and asylum-seekers. Tanzania is also host to some 85 000 Congolese refugees. Altogether the high number of refugees has strained the local response capacity of both Tanzanian authorities and aid agencies. Inadequate access to water food and shelter remain key challenges across all three refugee camps. There is a critical need for international support to continue to provide basic services and safe and dignified conditions for all refugees. With GAC’s support Oxfam Canada is providing water and sanitation protection and livelihoods support to an estimated 129 500 Burundian refugees and host community members living in or around the Nduta refugee camp in Kigoma region Tanzania.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved access to safe water and sanitation; and (2) improved food security and livelihoods opportunities amongst Burundian refugees and host communities in Tanzania. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or that are food insecure.
