Project Description

March 2019 – Cameroon is experiencing three distinct humanitarian crises in 2019: (i) violence in northeastern Nigeria cross-border raids and suicide attacks have caused massive displacements in the Far North region; (ii) conflict and insecurity in the Central African Republic continue to cause an influx of refugees east of the country; (iii) social tensions in the North-West and South-West – the “Anglophone regions” – have led to armed conflict between non-governmental armed groups and national security forces leading to massive internal displacement. The country is vulnerable to food insecurity malnutrition and lack of access to adequate basic social services. With GAC’s support Œuvre Léger is helping to assist up to 108 718 conflict-affected people in the Far North region. Project activities include: (1) constructing up to 16 water points benefiting up to 14 000 people; (2) providing free health services for up to 18 000 people; (3) raising awareness on good hygiene practices benefiting up to 20 000 people; (4) providing treatment against severe acute malnutrition to up to 1 000 children under the age of five; (5) providing cash support to farmers and vulnerable producers to meet their basic needs during welding periods; and (6) providing support to farmers producers and traders to better organize production and increase their productivity.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased safe access to sustainable drinking water; (2) increased access to comprehensive free and quality medical care; (3) increased access to sustainable interventions to prevent detect and treat severe acute malnutrition for children under five; (4) increased and enhanced access to quality and diversified food and livelihoods; (5) increased understanding of the availability of protection services and human rights for vulnerable people; and 6) increased community mobilization to prevent and respond to protection risks.
