Project Description
This project aims to support the work of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Myanmar and contribute to the establishment of a culture of human rights promotion and protection. Project activities include: (1) enhancing equality and countering discrimination against marginalized and vulnerable populations in Myanmar; (2) encouraging and improving the capacity of the Government of Myanmar to promote and protect the fundamental human rights of its population; and (3) integrating human rights-based approaches into the work of the United Nations Country Team.
Expected Results
The expected outcome for this project is the improved protection of human rights in Myanmar.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2019) include: (1) funding to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) contributed to advocacy on human rights issues concerning the Rohingya population and the monitoring of the implementation of the UN Fact Finding Mission on Myanmar report was released in September 2018; (2) between 2018 and 2019 the OHCHR monitored and reported on the human rights situation in Myanmar and facilitated visits for the Special Rapporteur (on the human rights situation in Myanmar) to Thailand and Bangladesh; and (3) working with the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Myanmar OHCHR contributed to reports to the Human Rights Council the UN General Assembly as well as issued press releases and statements promoting the need for justice and accountaiblity for the Rohingya.
